Cowboy bebop spike shoes11/20/2023 ![]() Almost everything is focused on the waist up so there’s very little -if any- footwork involved. And what they practiced, they did not call Wing Chun OR Jeet Kun Do, but Non-Classical Gung Fu. (After all, if you ever hear someone say that they have a “black belt” in JKD, you should probably treat this person’s general credibility with skepticism either they were lied to, or they are lying to you) However, saying it’s not a style at all is a misleading dismissal of the truth.Īlthough once again, I would like to imagine that the type of thing you’re referring to here is like how Bruce’s first ‘student’ was Jesse Glover. In that way, you’re wrong to say that it’s not simply one concrete “one-size-fits-all” style of martial arts. It is a philosophy, but it’s also a modified form of Wing Chun with several names and variation. But, c'mon that's not a name or quote drop, just an allusion) (Quick edit: I know I said it was lacking hints of Bruce Lee, and we get the Abdul Hakim fight. I also think given its infancy and the full story hasn't been revealed, we should try to hold off on judgement until a full argument has been presented. I think we are all too close to this subject to judge it without bias. However, where we are left, and the multiple butt kickings we saw Spike go through in the first season leaves room for the character to grow and start to adopt that martial art theory since he obviously is going to change his style a bit for the new perceived character arc. And it seems the first season was lacking any Bruce Lee hints. It's a blend of multiple martial arts so knowing a little in each style would serve him well also. Many of which you wouldn't be able to start training with unless you already have some form of base style already mastered or at the very least well on the way to mastering. I don't know how many of you have tried to find a Jeet Kune Do instructor, but the real ones are few and far between. You train to "become water".Īlso just on a regular training level. It also makes sense to the character as well, as Jeet Kune Do is always more of a state of mind rather than what many martial arts masters think of as a "true form". I feel that having a "base style of Wing Chun" would serve Spike well in developing his own theory/style of Jeet Kune Do. ![]() To me, it would make sense on a lot of different levels. I would much rather be discussing nuances like this rather than the artistic license used with the characters. 'Cowboy Bebop' Netflix Live Action Soundtrack To use the spoiler tag type the following (/spoiler) ![]() If Spike Spiegel is indeed Jewish, as viewers can potentially decide, then Cowboy Bebop includes one of the few instances of tasteful Jewish representation in genre fiction to date.Welcome to reddit's foremost hub for all things Cowboy Bebop, the 1998 series created by Shin'ichirō Watanabe. ![]() While his potential Jewish identity is unintentional, the interpretation of Spike as being Jewish makes him a rare breath of fresh air in the science fiction/noir genre. Still, the idea of Spike Spiegel being a non-stereotypical Jewish protagonist in a science fiction series is important for its own reasons.Īlthough genre fiction is, refreshingly, becoming more diverse in recent years, Jewish characters are still often overlooked, played by non-Jewish actors and actresses, and depicted with outdated and harmful stereotypes. In the case of Cowboy Bebop’s live-action adaptation, Spike Spiegel’s name is an alias, making his potential Jewish background highly unlikely, unlike the anime version. Instead, Spike Spiegel’s name and appearance are simply meant to look and sound “ cool,” as described by the creators. ![]() Spike’s background as a mobster-turned-bounty hunter, his love for Julia, his relationships with the rest of The Bebop’s crew, and his rivalry with his former friend Vicious are what truly matter for his character. In this way, Spike Spiegel’s seemingly Jewish identity in Cowboy Bebop appears wholly unintentional on the creators’ parts. ![]()
